Red Wines

  • Field Red

Seneca Lake extends the growing season in our vineyards, providing additional autumn hang time for red varietals. The resulting flavor development complements structure with depth and complexity. Each of the three varietals in our Field Red 2014 are picked in the cool, final days of fall. Those final days in 2014 fell in early November, building an enviable ripeness into this table wine.

Varietal Composition: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
    Harvest: November 5-10, 2014
    Alcohol by Volume: 13%

  • Pinot Noir 2014

Pinot Noir has been a hallmark of Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard since our founding. This delicate and expressive varietal benefits from the moderating effects of Seneca Lake and the long, warm autumns of our region.

2014 was a near ideal harvest season. A cool growing season guaranteed structured acidities, while ripening in our Magdalena Vineyard carried on with no interrupting rains or frosts. The resulting Pinot Noir is firm and dense on its initial approach, announcing its structure through a broad, red fruit finish.

    Varietal Composition: 100% Pinot Noir
    Harvest Date: September 29 & September 30, 2014
    Alcohol by Volume: 12.5%

Ideally suited to cool climate growing, Cabernet Franc is quickly gaining a reputation as a principal red wine grape in the Finger Lakes where long, brisk autumns allow for slow ripening. The outcome is a consistently ripe presentation with exceptional depth and body. Cabernet Franc is often used as a base for a blend, but the region is proving that the grape stands well on its own as a full-bodied wine. An alluring black cherry color and a compelling nose precede a palate that is generous and round, marked by vivacious berry flavors, along with savory earth notes and a full structure. Firm tannins grip the tongue, then soften into a flavorsome, pungent finish.

Food Pairing: Beef, Lamb, Grilled Meat

    Varietal Composition: 100% Cabernet Franc
Estate Vineyards: Magdalena, Seneca Lake AVA
    Alcohol by Volume: 12.5%

The Cabernet Franc Magdalena Vineyard is selected from a two-and-a-half acre plot at the warm, northern end of our Magdalena site. Extended skin contact, whole-cluster pressing, and time in younger Hungarian oak barrels impart a structure and depth to this full-bodied red. Dense tannins and prominent tobacco notes hint at the ageabilty of this Cabernet Franc though it will drink energetically while young.

    Varietal Composition: 100% Cabernet Franc
    Estate Vineyard: Magdalena
    Harvest: November 2 - November 14, 2014
    Alcohol by Volume: 13%

  • Dry Rosé 2016 (sold out)

Our Dry Rosé is hand-harvested from small plots of Pinot Noir on the western slopes of Seneca Lake. Its bright color is drawn from an eighteen hour cold soak. This imparts a red fruit profile to compliment its refreshing crispness. It is perfect for light, summery fair.

    Varietal Composition: Pinot Noir 100%
    Alcohol by Volume: 12%
    Residual Sugar: 0.2%
    Harvest Dates: September 9- 30, 2016
